Devotional Material?

I love starting the day in my garden. It is a natural quiet time . . . just me . . . and God. I pray my way through the upcoming events of the day. I water and weed my flowers. Recently, I have been working on a series of garden devotionals. Today, however, there was an unexpected guest in the garden. I'm not sure who was more surprised! I can say he added to my prayer time. I can say he isn't exactly devotional material for me : )

A Writing Day

What a great day! It is rainy here, and I spent the entire day writing! I will attend the Write to Publish Conference in Wheaton, Illinois in June. Plus, I am working on my middle grade series proposal so I have lots and lots to do.

Polishing the Proposal to Kate Angelella

My pitch to Kate Angelella went great. She kept some of the sample work I took with me . . . and asked me to send her a book proposal! In fact, she asked for a series proposal.

Today, I am polishing the proposal. Exciting!

If you are an aspiring writer, I recommend attending writing conferences. That is the best way to meet editors and to be asked to submit your work.

A Pitch to Kate Angelella!

I am at the Missouri Writers' Guild Conference in Cape Girardeau. . .This is a great conference for anyone in the Midwest who writes (or wants to write).

Last night, I heard a presentation by Jessica Burkhart about switching from a freelancer to being a full time writer. It was great information!

Later today I will pitch my new tween fiction book to Kate Angelella. Wish me luck! At last count, I have about 200 publications to my name (including two books), so I am anxious to talk with Kate. Okay - I am really nervous, too! More to come later.

Writing Time Divided

How do you use your writing time? Perhaps you write purely for enjoyment and do not wish to be published. I know a number of people in this category. I respect their passions.

Perhaps you write bread-and-butter type of work. . . in other words you write to earn money, but it is not necessarily creative writing. Perhaps you write only creative pieces. Perhaps you are like me and do both. I must admit that I want to be published, and I want to make money at it. I can't say that it is my dream to be famous. I just want to write.

As we approach the new year, everyone is conscious of goals. Some of the listservs I am a part of have been talking about that very thing. I would like to see my writing continue to grow in the following ways:
- increase the amount of time on creative writing
- increase creative writing submissions
- attend at least two writing conferences
- increase number of technical writing assignments
- increase marketing research in both areas
- have an overall plan of how my writing time will address each of these

What are your writing goals for 2007?

My Morning Writing Routine

I have been trying to decide how to begin this new blog. . . and then it hit me yesterday morning when I woke up to an ice storm. . . no electricity, no coffee, and no computer!

You may wonder why I didn't just sit down with a notebook (the old-fashioned kind) and a pencil and get to it. That has never been a productive way for me to write.

My writing USUALLY begins in the morning with coffee and some focused, uninterrupted time at my computer. My family is sleeping soundly (including the pugs) and my mind is not yet racing to keep up with the day's events. I find the early morning a perfect time to write - Unless, of course, ice knocks out the power.

I look forward to meeting you here on my blog and discussing the joys of writing. Ice permitting, see you here tomorrow!
